Daniel Pinkham composed Smart Set in 2005. (Clever title!) The texts are by Christopher Smart (1722–1771). He was born in Shipbourne, Kent, England. In 1739 he entered Pembroke College, Cambridge, where he became well known for his Latin verses, graduating with a B.A. in 1744. In 1749 he moved to London to become a writer. About 1756 he began to suffer from a form of religious mania. For the next eight years he spent most of his time in various asylums for the insane. Some of his most imaginative poetry is from this era. In April 1770 he was imprisoned for debt. He died the following year. Duration:6'00"The four sections of the set bear these four titles: 1.For Saturday 2. Echo 3. No Music 4. The Conclusion of the Matter
